What is 3D Printer Filament

3D printer filament is a thermoplastic material used in 3D printers.

There are many filaments of different materials with different characteristics. The diameter of the filament of a 3D printer is usually 1.75 mm and 3 mm.

Raw Material of 3D Printer Filament

There are many kinds of raw materials for 3D printing filaments. The materials that can be used in our production line are: ABS, PLA, PET, HIPS, PVA etc. compounding with color masterbatch.

The most commonly used materials are: ABS, PLA.


ABS plastic is quite easy to print. No matter what kind of extruder is used, the material will be extruded smoothly without worrying about clogging or solidification, but the steps after extrusion are a bit difficult.

This material has the characteristic of shrinking when exposed to cold, and will partially fall off and hang in the air on the heating plate, causing problems. In addition, if the height of the printed object is very high, sometimes the entire layer will be peeled off.

ABS material is suitable for making items that may fall, used in high temperature environments, or used in a rude manner.

It can withstand the high temperature in the car and has the sturdiness required for a mobile phone protective case. But it should be noted that the best environment for ABS is in a ventilated room.


PLA is a material that hardly shrinks. Even an open printer can print huge objects without worrying about the finished product hanging, skewed or damaged from the board.

This material is suitable for 3D printing in public places on the spot. PLA can also be used in outdoor projects without problems.

PLA is a biodegradable plastic, which can be recycled and decayed. It is suitable for making boxes, gifts, models and prototype parts. PLA is not suitable to be placed in things above 60°C, as this temperature will deform the material.

In addition, PLA material is fragile and cannot be used to make tool handles or objects subject to impact. Moreover, PLA is not suitable for making thin things, as long as it bends slightly, it will break.
