Foam extrusion

One technique, known as foam extrusion, is used to make foam products such as packing material, insulation, Play-Doh, food containers, even toys! It is a process of pushing a molten mixture, known as thermoplastic, through a die to produce a foam shape. This is a well know method of production where the process is quick and inexpensive.

The Process of Foam Extrusion Explained

The thermoplastic material is melted in a piece of equipment where heat melts the material, called an extruder, in foam extrusion. Once the melted material is poured out, it is combined with a blowing agent, which facilitates the formation of bubbles of the foam. The mixture next gets pushed through a die, a specialized tool that provides shape to the foam. Once the foam has cooled and hardened to a desired length, it is cut.
