Extrude filament

Extrusion is you're making spaghetti out of plastic. It’s a process in which plastic materials are melted and pushed through a small hole, forming long strings of plastic that can be employed in 3D printing.

Imagine a Play-Doh factory. You feed Play-Doh into a pellet maker machine, press it down, and a long string of Play-Doh emerges. That’s sort of how filament extrusion is done to begin with. This plastic material goes into a machine known as an extruder, where it is heated up until it becomes gooey. Then a motor drives the plastic through a tiny nozzle, forming a continuous filament. This filament can be any plastic, in any color, so that what you want to make, you can.

The importance of precise temperature control in filament extrusion

Just as when you are cooking cookies in an oven temperature has to be perfect when extruding filament. If it’s too hot, the plastic might burn and create bubbles in the filament. Too cool, and the filament won’t bond properly. That’s why accurate temperature control in the extruder is important. The temperature must be adjusted and controlled exactly in order to make sure the filament is smooth and textures are strong.
